Again, I agree. One of the seductive things about "film noir" is that it doesn't look "lit" when, in fact, it is lit quite carefully. The dark, rim lit look of film noir leads a lot of people to think that it was shot by available light when that simply isn't the case at all. True, you can shoot by available light and sometimes get lucky, ending up with a quasi-noir look, but that generally isn't the rule and certainly doesn't apply to the question, "Should I be concerned about my lighting?", especially if you want consistent results.
